Tuesday

The first place Tigers have their bullpen in order, a huge problem a year ago. Fernando Rodney got his 17th save over the weekend in 17 tries. Starter Armanado Galarraga got off to a rocky start his last game, but managed to bounce back and pick up his fourth win of the season. He finished with four runs in six innings while striking out five and walking one. He faces a lousy offensive team in Oakland. The A's are on a 22-12 under the total run. Don't look for an offensive show! Play the Tigers/A's under the total.

MLB hot and cold aces betting report
By MILLER GROUP. June 30, 2009

We've seen some aces come full circle over the last couple of weeks, going from dominant into a lengthy slump - and now back out of it again.

That's the roller coaster that is the 162-game MLB season.

Here's a look at two aces to play, and two to fade in the coming weeks.

The best of the best

Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals

It’s time to start banking on Zack Greinke again.

He's put together back-to-back fine starts after an extended slide, holding the Astros and Pirates to just three earned runs over 14 1-3 innings of work.

Perhaps the most positive sign to come out of Greinke's last two starts has been that he hasn't issued a single walk.

Control hasn't been much of an issue this season, with only 18 walks to date, but in his three starts prior to his current two-game winning streak, he had handed out six base-on-balls.

I should also point out that he allowed three home runs during that three-start stretch. He hasn't allowed a single round tripper in any other start this season.

Greinke's next start is scheduled for Friday versus the White Sox, in what should be a winnable game for the Royals at home.

Zach Duke, Pittsburgh Pirates

While he doesn't get much press pitching for the lowly Pirates, Zach Duke is quietly having the best season of his young career.

The key with betting Duke is playing him at home, where he is 6-3 with an ERA under 3.00 in nine starts this season.

Heading into Monday's loss to the Cubs, Duke hadn't lost a start at home since May 1 when he fell 4-0 to the Cincinnati Reds. Since then, he is 5-1, allowing only 13 earned runs in 43 innings pitched.

That's nothing new for the 26-year-old left-hander. He is a career 24-20 at home, but just 10-25 on the road.

The Pirates remain mired in sixth place in the NL Central but have shown some signs of life recently, winning four of their last six games.

Even in his loss Monday, Duke still put in a quality start. He went seven innings, giving up only three runs on seven hits, but was let down by the Bucs lack of run support.

Cold as ice

Ted Lilly, Chicago Cubs

The Cubs lost for the first time in six Ted Lilly starts in Detroit last week.

Could it be a sign of things to come as we head into July?

The Tigers absolutely ripped Lilly in that most recent start, picking up 10 hits and six runs (all earned) in six innings.

Over his last three outings, Lilly has allowed 25 hits and 11 earned runs over 19 2-3 innings.

For the season, he has allowed 10 fewer hits than inning pitched - so those recent numbers are somewhat alarming.

While Wrigley Field has been extremely kind to the veteran left-hander (4-1, 1.85 ERA), his road starts have been disastrous. In eight starts away from home, Lilly is just 3-4 with a 4.96 ERA.

His next start will come Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

Verlander had a nice 7-1 run to get to 8-3 on the season, but now we're starting to see some regression.

The Tigers have won only twice in his last five starts and he has allowed 20 hits and issued nine walks in his last three starts, covering 17 innings of work.

Verlander's ERA away from home is approaching five. On the trail, he has allowed five more hits than innings pitched.

Contrast that with his home numbers, a sparkling 1.11 ERA and 17 fewer hits than innings pitched.

The Tigers will remain on the road through next weekend, with Verlander getting his next start in Oakland Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers ace has just one win in four career starts at McAfee Coliseum.

Tuesday's Short Hops
June 30, 2009
By Brian Edwards
VegasInsider

With the NBA and NHL Playoffs over and horse racing’s triple crown in the books, bettors have to concentrate on bases right now if they want to produce profits. With this in mind, let’s stroll through Tuesday’s card with short hops from all over the diamond in both leagues.

Boston RHP John Smoltz (0-1, 9.00 ERA) will make his second start since leaving Atlanta to join the Red Sox when they play Tuesday at Baltimore. The future Hall of Famer, who is coming off elbow surgery, made his first MLB start in any other uniform since spending 20 seasons with the Braves last week. The result was a 9-3 loss at Washington after Smoltz labored through a 34-pitch first inning in which he gave up four runs. However, he settled down to retire the side in order in the second, fourth and fifth innings. Smoltz gave up one run in the third and five runs total in five innings, but he walked just one batter and fanned five. Mike Lowell is “out” for the BoSox. Las Vegas Sports Consultants opened Terry Francona’s team as a minus-130 ‘chalk’ with a total of 10 ‘over’ (minus-120).

After an off day Monday, the Yankees are back at home Tuesday to host Seattle. Joba Chamberlain (4-2, 3.81) will get the starting nod for Joe Girardi’s club. The hard-throwing righty garnered the victory in an 8-4 win Wednesday at Atlanta, working 6 1/3 innings and giving up just a pair of earned runs. Most spots have installed the Yankees as ‘chalky’ favorites with a price tag north of minus-200.

The Braves will host the Phillies in a series opener Tuesday at Turner Field. Philadelphia is atop the National League East standings, leading the Mets by 2 ½ games (going into Monday’s action). Atlanta is in fourth place but just five games off the pace. LVSC opened Bobby Cox’s squad as a minus-135 home favorite with a total of 8 ½ ‘over’ (minus-120). Charlie Manuel’s team is an MLB-best 26-12 on the road. The Braves ended a four-game losing streak Sunday by dodging a sweep in a 2-1 win over Boston. Derek Lowe (7-6, 4.53) will take the ball for Atlanta. The right-hander was rocked for 11 hits and eight runs in a loss to the Yankees in his last outing.

Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins (.211, 6 HR’s and 27 RBI’s) is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday after a four-game absence to clear his head and work on his hitting stroke amid a deep slump.

Colorado RHP Jason Marquis (9-5, 4.22) has enjoyed plenty of success against the Dodgers, compiling a 4-1 record and 2.19 career ERA against L.A. Marquis is the fifth-best money pitcher in the majors this year, as his team has a plus-635 money total and 10-5 ledger when he toes the rubber. The Rockies remain extremely hot with a 20-3 record in their last 23 games (prior to Monday’s late-night tilt at L.A.).

Mets’ LHP Johan Santana (9-5, 3.08) will go against Milwaukee on Tuesday. The lefty is 4-2 with a 3.13 career ERA against the Brew Crew. The Brewers are 12-8 against southpaws.

San Francisco LHP Randy Johnson will toe the slab for the Giants on Tuesday against St. Louis. Hitting the 300-win mark has not slowed down the Big Unit, who is 2-0 with a 3.20ERA in his last three outings. Most books are listing the Cards as minus-200 home favorites with Chris Carpenter (5-2, 1.78) scheduled to throw. Carpenter is 3-0 with a 3.03 ERA in five lifetime starts versus San Francisco.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

Going into Monday’s play, St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols was leading the majors in homers with 28. Sportsbook.com had him installed as the minus-500 ‘chalk’ to finish the regular season with the most diners. The next-shortest odds at the offshore website belonged to New York’s Mark Teixeira (+400), Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard (+500) and Carlos Pena (+500).

Going into Monday’s games, Sportsbook.com’s updated future odds had the Red Sox and the Dodgers as the plus-400 co-favorites to win the World Series (risk $100 to win $400). The Yankees have plus-500 odds, while the Angels’ number is plus-800. The Phillies have plus-1200 odds (risk $100 to win $1,200).

Going into Monday’s action, the NL Central was clearly wide open with Milwaukee and St. Louis sharing the lead. The Reds and Cubs were in third and fourth place, 2 ½ and 3 ½ games behind, respectively. Houston is four games off the pace and the Pirates are five games back. The Cardinals are the plus-140 favorites at Sportsbook.com (risk $100 to win $140), while the Cubs have plus-150 odds. Milwaukee is plus-300, while the longshots are as follows: Reds (10/1), Houston (15/1) and Pittsburgh (50/1).

Boston’s bullpen continues to be the best in baseball with a 2.92 ERA.

(963) HOUSTON ASTROS
(964) SAN DIEGO PADRES
Take "(963) HOUSTON ASTROS"

Mike Hampton is back from his latest stint on the disabled list to make a start for the Astros. Hampton had been pitching pretty well before getting dinged up physically, and there's no reason he can't handle the feeble San Diego offense. Josh Banks makes the start here for the Padres, and he simply hits too many bats with fringy stuff. I can see the heart of the Houston order doing some damage here, and I'll look for the Astros to win this one.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Sacramento Monarchs at Chicago Sky (-7.5, 144)

Even their worst offensive performance of the season couldn't keep the Chicago Sky from extending the best home start in franchise history. The WNBA's worst team may not be able to stop them, either.

The Sky look to improve to 5-0 at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday when they take on the Sacramento Monarchs, owners of the league's worst record.

Chicago (5-3), which hasn't finished with a winning record in its first three seasons of existence, is in second place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind Indiana. Almost all of that success can be attributed to the Sky's play at home, where they improved to a franchise-record 4-0 on Saturday, beating Washington 68-63.

The Sky won despite shooting a season-low 37.5 percent for the game, and scoring only eight points in the opening quarter. Candice Dupree led the way with 23 points, while Jia Perkins added 14 points and eight steals, and Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

"It's nice to have more than one player who likes to put the team on her back,'' Dupree said. "Syl had some huge rebounds and I was trying to crash the offensive boards. It was a total team effort.''

Chicago's effort has been vastly improved at home, where it went 17-34 over its previous three seasons. The Sky are averaging fewer points at home (72.8) than on the road (79.3), but they are giving up an average of 26 fewer points at the UIC Pavilion.

"This year we're more consistent (at home)," Fowles said. "Anytime last year it might have been 'Yeah, whatever,' but we're very focused this year and want to win."

Fowles and the Sky could have an easy time against Sacramento (1-7), which is winless in five road games including the first three of its current five-game trip.

The Monarchs average 72.4 points per game - fifth-fewest in the WNBA - and they've been held to 69.0 points on the road. Sacramento has also lost five in a row overall, including an 86-72 defeat at Detroit on Sunday. It closes this trip Thursday at Minnesota.

Pick: Under 144

Washington Mystics at San Antonio Silver Stars (-3, 146)

Becky Hammon's return has given the San Antonio Silver Stars an immediate lift. Now she'll try to help the defending Western Conference champions move above .500 for the first time this season Tuesday night when they host the Washington Mystics.

Hammon missed two games for San Antonio (3-3) earlier this month while playing with the Russian national team in the European women's championships. Without her, the Silver Stars suffered double-digit losses at New York and Connecticut.

San Antonio has won both games since its leading scorer returned, beating Phoenix 91-87 last Tuesday and defeating Sacramento 62-52 on Friday. After scoring 19 points against the Mercury, Hammon had a season-high 26 on Friday to go with her five rebounds, six assists and five steals.

"I thought Becky really thought the game out well, as she put us in some situations that were really good," Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes said.

Hughes' team jumped out to a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but had to hold off a rally by Sacramento in the fourth. The Silver Stars shot only 39.7 percent, but outscored the Monarchs 13-3 at the free-throw line. Hammon was 10 of 10 at the line.

Despite scoring fewer than 65 points for the fourth time this season, San Antonio is hoping Hammon's return will improve an offense which is among the league's worst at 69.0 points per game.

Hammon averaged 24.0 points as the Silver Stars won both meetings last season with Washington (4-3).

The Mystics were held below 75 points for the first time this year in their last game, falling 68-63 at Chicago on Saturday for their second straight loss following a 4-1 start.

Seattle Mariners (-110)
Tue Jun 30 '09 7:05p

The Yankees are rolling. They’ve won five straight overall and look to extend their current streak while hoping to maintain their dominance of the Seattle Mariners. The Yanks have been crushing the baseball against the Mariners hitting .348 while averaging 9.0 runs during an eight-game winning streak at home versus Seattle. This will be the teams' first meeting at the new Yankee Stadium aka Coors Field of the East.

New York has also dominated the Mariners on the mound during this streak. The Yankees have posted a 2.75 ERA in their last eight meetings and with Joba Chamberlain on the hill the Bronx Bombers are hopeful of another strong performance. This will be Joba’s first career appearance against Seattle.
The Mariners will counter with reliever turned starter Brendan Morrow who is 0-3 this season and will be making his fourth start following 16 relief appearances. His ERA is an astronomical 5.64

It’s doubtful that Seattle’s woeful offense will be able to take advantage of the new Yankee Stadium launching pad. The Mariners rank 29th in runs scored and 20th in homeruns. Seattle is middle of the pack with a .260 team batting average and their lack of punch is evident in a 44-29-2 record to the UNDER.

And while the Yanks rank in the top three in all of baseball in homeruns, runs per game and OPG, it usually takes some help from the other side to cash the OVER. The Yankees are just 6-4 to the UNDER in their last ten outings.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers Los Angeles Angels
+100 at BOOKM > 13h.

Betting Trends

-LAA are 8-3 in Saunders' last 11 road starts.

-Angels are 7-0 in their last 7 road games.

-Rangers are 0-5 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.

-Rangers are 1-8 in Feldmans last 9 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.

Pretty hard to imagine that Texas is the favored team after such poor play recently (3-7 last 10 games)!! If that was not enough LAA are now on a 6 game winning streak where they have just been playing great. Today Saunders goes for LAA and he has been much better in his last 4 games going 2-0 with a 3.64 ERA!! Feldman goes for TEX today and although his record looks good don't be fooled. He has not won a games since June 3rd and his ERA has been over 4.5 in that stretch. TEX is usually known for having one of the best offenses but lately they can't score runs. In the last 10 they are only averaging 3.8 runs per game!! Conversely LAA have been scoring in bunches averaging over 7 runs per game in the last 10 played. Love the extra juice today from a hotter team with better pitching and hitting! SCORE LAA 7 - TEX 3

New York Mets vs. Milwaukee Brewers New York Mets
-140
Take the New York Mets on the Moneyline, This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and we are actually getting great value with the Mets who have the superior pitcher on the mound Tuesday night. The Mets are 12-3 in Johan Santana's (9-5, 3.08 ERA) last 15 starts when pitching with 4 days rest and they are 7-1 in Santana's last 8 starts against an NL Central team. Santana has pitched solid over 8 career starts against the Milwaukee Brewers with an ERA of just 2.96 and the Mets are 16-6 in Santana's last 22 starts as a favorite. Santana faced the Brewers once this season and he allowed just 5 hits and 0 earned runs over 7.0 innings while striking out 7 batters. The Brewers are just 0-4 in their last 4 games as a home underdog of +110 to +150 and the Mets are now 5-1 in their last 6 road games against the Brewers. Take the New York Mets as my MLB Bonus Play for Tuesday night.
